Parsnip cosmetics
« on: September 26, 2013, 17:09 »
I've just dug up the largest and best shaped parsnip I've ever grown. About half a metre in length and about 15cm in diameter at the top but it's beauty, size and symmetry are flawed by a black canker-like ring at its top. Anyone any idea what causes this and therefore how to prevent it? I know it doesn't detract from the veg itself but I'd really like to avoid it and brag about the beauty of my parsnips  :)

It's often carrot root fly damage.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

There's no sign of root-fly damage. It's quite superficial and easily peeled away when they are cleaned up for cooking

If it's canker, it can be down to drought, poor drainage, over rich soil, or if damaged by root flys etc., try growing canker resistant varietys such as gladiator, add a little lime if the soil is a bit acid and double dig to improve drainage.

I'd agree with Totty on a number of things, however, whether it is canker or just physical injury like damage (both are possible, from what you write I'm tempted for the latter) both are worsened and can be simply induced by the size you are proud of.  :D I'm not joking with you.

I'd recommend Avonresister, if it were canker, I'm uncertain though it is.

Otherwise, for size and physical damage, try to keep even moisture levels.

I have canker in my parnsips every year.

I do not protect against carrot root fly and the canker gets in where the fly has damaged the parsnips.  You don't tend to get the level of fly damage in the parsnip roots as you do in carrots.

I also do not protect against carrot root fly on parsnips. And indeed there are less damages than to carrots.

And indeed any disease can get in through any injury, let that be from insects or other inflicted damage.

I do not get canker. Apart from Avon, I usually grow Hollow Crown (till May sowing). And back on topic, I wrote earlier, the professional I trust says later sowing, smaller roots, less problem. ;)
