Is this potato blight??
« on: September 21, 2013, 19:18 »
Ih ave recently planted some seed potatoes, supposed to be Christmas Winterval.  They have been doing fine till the last couple of days.  I have pulled one plant up hoping to save the rest.  Then I saw this that I have taken a pic of.  I hope it isnt, but I think it may well be.  If so what should I do with the rest.

It does look like blight on the stems to me :(

If the rest haven't got it then I'd let them grow on, keeping a beady eye on them - cos usually once one has it the rest follow suit.

And on those leaves. Hard luck but one of the hazards of trying to grow out of season.

It does look very much like late blight to me too  :(

They sell potatoes for Winterval harvest because they can !  It makes more money for them.

They are best grown in a poly tunnel or tubs that can be taken into a greenhouse as the foliage will be killed off as soon as the night temperature drops too low.

Ah, so best stick to seasonal and skip the Christmas ones.   I am pig sick to be honest, I was looking forward to new spuds. If blight is in the ground how long will it take to clear and can I plant in it again.

Blight doesn't live over winter in the soil, and you can grow something else there now, if you want to  :)

Thank you again.  I will have a look and see what takes my fancy.  With garlic, do you just plant the cloves of the garlic you buy or do you have to buy special ones like you do potatoes.

I am sorry I am asking you so many questions.

You should buy them from the garden centre, but many people just plant supermarket ones and hope for the best.
