Rainbow carrots
« on: September 15, 2013, 21:19 »
Took up some small ones yesterday for florences dinner, we pulled white, orange and red but the red inside was orange, so surely if you peeled it, the colour would be lost. Ours just got washed and cooked but then the skin peeled off during boiling. Was this because they were picked early or something that happens. And why have rainbow carrots if its just the skin that is coloured.

Florence was very unimpressed as she said thats not a carrot.  ::)

my rainbow carrots don't have any red - white, yellow and orange, that's it.  :( But the colours do go all the way through on mine.

Most of the coloured ones are orange inside - bit of a con methinks :D
'Yellowstone' are a tasty yellow carrot - and are yellow all the way through ;)

With many, you find just the outer layer is different colour, however I grew red ones before and do not think they were orange inside. My this year's mix is with purple, there is a change in shade going inside.

Losing the outer layer I have never heard of, someone else might be able to help.

Why to grow them? Different vitamin content. Apart from the colours.

My purple ones were orange inside, too.

Shame really, although they did taste good  :)

I just grew them for florence really to give her some colour on her plate, however in florences world carrots should be orange  ::) so we will be eating them. I didnt pull a purple but they should have purple in the pack.

Will post pictures of the next ones, when they are a bit bigger

I've grown them several times and they were different colours all the way through. I especially liked the lemon yellow and the creamy colours

We grew the Jaun D'obtuse de Doubs and it's definitely yellow throughout. It grew really well, far better than the Dragon Purple and Giant Red. The flavour is a bit more parsnip like but still a tasty carrot.
