Advice please? Japenese Clematis (Paniculata)
« on: September 14, 2013, 09:51 »
Hi All,
Does anyone know what the growth rate of this plant is or have any experience of this plant i have considered Russian Vine BUT know it can be very rampant therefore i am considering this clematis. I need a quick climber to cover my arch and fence to block out my nosey neighbours >:( all i can find on this plant is that it is a very fast grower but how fast  any advice or suggestions much appreciated  ;)

Just as a quick answer before my evening meal, climbing clematis loses its leaves over winter, so an evergreen plant would be best. I know of some but their growth per year will vary, also what soil it is in, how well it is planted and looked after are also major factors. Will look uo for you but see what others on here say too.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Clematis paniculata is evergreen, but it's not particularly hardy, unless you're got a sheltered spot.

Thanks both for the replies firstly the soil is well drained but not very shaded so i think this variety may suffer in my garden  :( i am being drawn back to Russian Vine as it's so hardy but  descisions descisions  ::)

If you want a big evergreen climber you could look at Trachelospermum jasminoides or Clematis armandii.  They are both vigorous without being as crazy as Russian Vine  :)

I wouldn't plant it. I know you want to something to grow quickly - but that thing never knows when to stop growing - it's monstrous

Seriously, avoid Russian vine.  It has completely taken over the boundaries of several allotment plots ...
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

If you are looking for a fast growing climber, how about a rambling rose, such as Paul's Himalayan Musk, Kiftsgate or Rambling Rector?  They are all fast growing but can be easily controlled with pruning.  Clematis montana is also a fast grower (although not evergreen).

Personally I have never had much luck with Trachelospermum, I've lost two over winter now, I don't think it's particularly hardy.

I really would avoid Russian Vine too, unless you REALLY enjoy pruning.  However, it is good for covering small buildings - like the gasworks.
No matter how many plants I have in my garden, I can always find room for one more.
