WG - garlic question for you!
« on: January 03, 2008, 18:42 »
I planted my garlic some time back in a raised bed (in early November if I remember correctly without referring to my notes), but have yet to see any signs of them.

I know some people have mentioned growth and others have none.  I am getting worried though, is it normal for several weeks to pass without any signs?  I cant go and check them at the mo due to being snowed in.

I have only ever grown garlic once before, but they were planted in the february with some good sucess so have nothing to compare to.  (BTW I bought them from the really garlicky company before I discovered you were selling yours!)

Any reassurance (please?) that they are still ok?

They will be fine.  I don't have any showing either but they will be busy under the surface.  I always reckon on them showing (and keeping pace) with the daffodils.

I was a bit concerned about my garlic too, but have ten poking through now.
Growing salad leaves isn't rocket science.

Some of my saved garlic from last year came through before Christmas but of  the rest only one shoot so far,I find that they pop up all at once just as you have convinced yourself that the have rotted,if you really doubt you could gently pull some soil away and check a clove but I think you`ll find they`ve grown roots and are jusy biding their time before they throw up shoots.

Does any of you know, what the difference in the shoots of garlic and shallots ist? I can't remember, what I've planted of the two.. and something came up very quickly --> it's green and long

(actually I can't even remember, if I really did plant all the shallots and if, what I then have done with the garlic *scratchin the head)

Thanks,

Bell

Mine have just started showing too.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

I planted both, the shallots came up very quickly indeed, and looks much grassy-er than the garlic which you have to train your eyes to look for the green line.. the shallots are very pretty bunches of stalks.
