Penstemons
« on: September 01, 2013, 21:33 »
I have a couple pf penstemons which last year I left and did not cut them down or trim them as I was wary that his might kill them.  Now of course they are really leggy, so should they be cut down for the winter?  if so to what height and when?  grateful for any help :)

I leave them until the new growth starts in Spring & then prune them, gives them a chance to get through the winter. If they are a big plant try taking out about  1/2 of the stems out now, they might just put on enough new growth & have chance to harden before the frosts arrive.

They are quite amenable for cuttings to be taken off the growth and potted up in case some don't survive the winter.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

I'm just about to do that, do you keep them inside the greenhouse or coldframe?

I keep mine in the greenhouse with the fuschias, and fleece them if it gets really cold.

They do shoot from old woody growth in the Spring, after they have been cut back  :D

Assuming they do not get frozen solid of course  ;)
