Stunted Agapanthus
« on: August 28, 2013, 19:10 »
I bought three bare root Agapanthus that were delivered around February this year which I potted up in a largeish pot in general purpose compost with some stuff for drainage at the bottom of the pot. I then left it in the cold frame for a while due to the miserable spring and I did know they can be a bit flakey with the cold. One sent up leaves in the spring but it seems to have stopped at around two inches and just stuck there. Just noticed another of the roots has done the same quite recently, I assumed the other two had died due to me being a bit rubbish. The variety should be Blue Danube.

Any ideas why this has happened, maybe just need to leave them to feed up this year and maybe get a bit more from them next year? Or is it worth feeding them with something as well.

If they were baby roots, then the leaves may well be quite small this year. Agapanthus do flower best when a bit pot bound, so don't worry of they give no flowers for a while if they are in a largish pot.

Keep them under cover and on the dry side during the cold weather - a bit too late to feed them as this might give sappy growth which is vulnerable to rotting off.
Make sure they have enough water next summer, as although mature plants are drought resistant, immature plants respond better if they are watered regularly

Hope they do well for you next year as they are lovely flowers  :D

Possibly the roots had dried out somewhat when you got them? Also as said, could just be babies.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Mine grew in the greenhouse and then have just sulked once I put them into a bed - I might take them out and put them into a pot. Beautiful flowers though :-)
My husband's a water sign, I'm an earth sign, together we make mud :-)
