Eggbound chook
« on: August 04, 2013, 18:26 »
Hi all,

One of my hens I think is eggbound. She's been in and out of the nest box to no avail (no eggs) for the last couple of days. She gets narky when I go near her when she's in the box, which is really unusual as she's a docile wee girl. Have googled it, I think she may be eggbound... what can I do about it? Is a trip to the vets in the morning the best bet?

Thanks in anticipation... Diddy

Hi Diddy,
It could be that she is going broody.  Can you actually feel any lumps that could be a stuck egg?  If so you could try a nice luke warm bath for her for about 20 minutes or so.  Gently towel dry and if it is not warm and dry weather finish off drying her with a cool hairdryer.  This sometimes help them to relax their muscles a bit and aids them laying.  You could also try using a little cooking oil as lubrication for her vent which should help.

Hiya... I did pick her up last night but couldn't feel anything obvious. I'll take her to the vet today just to make sure.

Vet couldn't find any evidence of an egg so she must be broody as otherwise healthy  ::) Never had a broody hen before...
