« on: August 04, 2013, 15:07 »
We popped in green cabbage with 4-5 true leaves on 21st june and picked one today which had a nice heart and weighed in at 3lb is that not a bit speedy.  i was expecting them to be winter cabbage. Not sure which variety they are durham early rings a bell but here they are.

Just seems really speedy, can i sow more now to make it to over winter.

I sowed Durham early too as I don't usually grow much cabbage, it being so cheap around here in the farm shops, but they look like yours!    Thought I'd sow some as I had the room.

Many varieties of cabbage can be either Spring sown to make hearts in Summer/ Autumn, or Summer sown to plant out in the Autumn to heart up in the Spring. It usually tells you this on the packet.

If you sow some now and plant them out in late September they will heart up in the Spring.

It didnt say anything on the packet as it was an amazon buy so all info is missing.

A good tip if you have no instructions but know the variety is to look it up on a popular website

e.g. T&M Durhan Early

"Sow spring cabbage indoors seed from March to May for Summer harvesting or July to August to overwinter for a spring harvest."
