"... assumed they were unisex ..."

:?  Yes, girls and boys, separate. Not a big surprise, but the males have thicker, larger spears.

If you've read the Swop Shop & Recycle Forum, you'll know I've been trying to GIVE the things away :!:

I don't read Swop, DD, as it doesn't work for overseas too well

Seadart make sure you prepare the ground well before you plant. They can rot off if they get too wet so you must ensure good drainage. I had your problem late last autumn as a neighbour gave me crowns but I didn't have bed prepared at lottie. The crowns just about survived in a flower bed till spring but took several months before they showed signs of life after I replanted them at lottie. I should have prepared interim bed better but didn't have time-rain was pouring down!

Good luck HH
Keep digging

especially seeds through Customs - is Canada as bad as USA and Australia for that?

Lumpy seeds like peas, asparagus, etc need better packaging so they don't poke through envelopes during transit and really annoy customs people. The extra cost overseas to the sender can be annoying.
Flat seeds like toms can be sent by letter. But if ordering through seed companies, most won't do 'foreign' orders, or they charge heavy p&h.
