Cabbage Conundrum - any brassica spotters about?
« on: July 10, 2013, 11:54 »
I`ve grown a bed of what I thought were dutch ballhead cabbages ( Langedijk). That`s what it said on the packet so a reasonable assumption, I thought.

However, the seedlings I planted out a few months ago with high hopes of a crop of storable coleslaw cabbage have become something quite different.

I`ve got a few hispi type pointy ones - OK not what I wanted, but so far so tasty. I`ve also got some thing that looks like a broccolli, sprout, - something tall any way.

Anyone know what it could be? - if it`s something I`ve not got already I might keep them. otherwise the chooks can have them and I`ll stick some january king plants in the gap.

Anyone else get any mystery crops this year? The seeds were from a reputable supplier (kings).
Perhaps the brassica seed packing machine had not been cleaned out :(

My first thought when I saw the tall ones, was that they`d bolted rosehip - the pointed heads are well formed however (I`ve been eating them already) and the leaves on the tall ones are quite a different colour with a reddish rib.

Maybe I`ll leave them in and see what they grow into. It`ll be eaten whatever happens, by myself or the chickens!

The one on the right looks like a summer, pointed headed variety, the one on the left looks like a round headed cabbage, just not headed up yet. It might be an autumn/winter variety, in which case it's got a way to go yet.
