Perching Pekins
« on: July 07, 2013, 07:59 »
Time to get the coop redesigned so scouring t'internet about how they like to sleep.  So far a I find they prefer to huddle on shavings (long term poo picking) or the top perch.  Perch 1" x 2"....?

Anyone with happily perching pekins who can advise?

BTW - my chicken viewing bench was supposed to be for me to sit on to view them  Seems to be reversed :D

Making themselves at home I see nerdle.  They always want to be in on the action so you won't have anything to yourself.

I hope someone has info on perching for you.   ;)

Oh yes thank you - I love them so much! Fighting a losing battle taming them though - they don't like being picked up and I was hoping for a 'happy hen on lap' scenario.  I pick the timid ones up and hold them for a while each day but I feel them trembling and they just want to be together.

Hi. Mine don't like to perch at all. They like to be in the nest box on the shavings and straw  :nowink:

Long chat with WONDERFUL Roger Thomas secretary of Pekin Bantam Club.  They like a smooth round 1.5in diameter perch 4 ft from ground with an access ladder.

As adults they will be tamer - mine are currnently teenagers and not happy about being handled.

Done!

I thought that might be the case.  I have a 16 month old Welsummer bantam that has been really skittish but now insists on escaping the chicken end of the garden.  She does it so many times a day I think she is just after some attention!   ::)

I have still to see her escape so I can block her route.
