Whats the difference between a soup and a stew
« on: July 01, 2013, 10:26 »
We are having chicken stew for tea but i also make a lot of soups so whats the difference  i always used to call blended ones soup and lumpy more of a stew but looking at my soup bible they dont make that assumption.

So someone please share with me.

I've always called soups something I can knock up in about 20 minutes, whether its smooth or lumpy, but a stew is cooked for longer, with meat and bigger bits of veg in it, and a casserole is an oven stew!   ;) :) :)

I googled it as it was getting on my nerves, several reason came up like you said

Soups are faster and quicker to knock up.
Soups are served as part of a bigger meal instead of a stew which is more of a meal.
And the thickness also comes into it.
And the cooking time is a major factor.

It was just one of those questions that bugged me.  ::)
So we are having chicken stew for tea not soup lol  :D

I agree, stew bigger lumps more solid, soup smaller lumps and potentially more liquid unless you get a really good rib-sticking scotch broth. :D

I agree with your answer beetroot queen  think it is a fine line line like when does a courgette become a marrow.

My mum used to make beef stew and I used to blend it up for school lunch the next day. I called it stew soup

I thought a stew had big lumps and thick gravy, while a soup had small limps and skilley (thin) gravy.
