I am early for my earlys?
« on: June 26, 2013, 07:43 »
At the plot last night for a couple of hours and thought it was time to dig up a few of my early spuds (Rocket). Dug up 2 plants only to find very few spuds down there. I only got about 8 good sized puds from the 2 plants dug up. There where however lots of shoots still with marble sized spuds on the end's.
So I was wondering was I early for my early's.
Thanks Ste.

Sme people say yes some say no. Everything is growing at its own speed this year and the normal has gone out the window.

Mine are staying in the ground for a good few weeks yet.

I was going to dig up some ladyC but looking at this post I think that I will wait. The leeks are going to have to come from the shop this year. I put them in late last year and it was a waste of time.

Have a furtle under one plant to see what's there. If they're too small just cover the roots up again to carry on growing.

Kent is a good bit warmer than where you are  ;)

I think it really depends when you put them in,they need 12 weeks and maybe an extra week or two for the cold weather early on.
So if you planted them on the 3rd of April its 12 week now, so I would try next week,if you planted later its another couple of weeks.hth

Mine were late going in so will be late coming out. Regarding succession its gone out the window, I'm now at the stage of putting things wherever there is a gap. Manuring in the Winter will be interesting!!
I was put on this earth to accomplish a certain number of things; right now I am so far behind I will never die.

I've just dug up a lovely lot of potatoes and they are Kestrel (second earlies) at 12 weeks.  So you can't tell until you dig one up.
I wasn't expecting anything till late July/ early August, so am ecstatic, that is more than the whole of last year!

Well, what can I say. The plants that I dug up the other day where Rocket, and they tasted fantastic, can't wait to taste the rest. Got 3 other types to dig up yet, 2nd's, salads and mains.

I had a furtle and they are tiny. Furtling resulted in taking out one plant as space in the containers is awkward. The interesting thing was the seed potato; it is still remarkably firm suggesting I guess that these are quite a way off ready.

What a year
