PEAS!!!! How to ???
« on: June 13, 2013, 12:30 »
Hi all,

I have 5 plants in buckets currently growing in my garden.
However they are starting to look like a normal bedding plant. I have placed a bamboo support in there but doesnt seam to work.

So 2 questions really:-

1) Am I ok to grow in buckets / plant pots - Large ones mind ?
2) How do you support peas, as i guess they should really be growing vertical and not like a bedding plant??

Thanks,
Web.
Keith

You need canes around the outside with lots of string around the canes, or twiggy branches for them to scramble up. They hang on with tendrils rather than climb like beans do.

I had some sweet peas that I needed to plant out, so I put them in a big pot and nicked a bit of old chicken wire that OH was going to throw away, tied 2 bamboo canes to the sides and pushed it down the inside of the pot.  Then I started to twine the little sweet peas into the holes in the chicken wire.

That was only yesterday, but they look okay at the moment!

I stuck a pole in the middle of mine once, and strung string around the whole bunch.  worked fine but picking was a bit tricky  ::)

This is my first year growing peas (or anything for that matter) and I was quite surprised with how much help peas need to get climbing! I've used the DD method and have loosely tied the plants to the horizontal wires to help them along.
