duckling, ducklings and more ducklings!
« on: June 12, 2013, 21:37 »
well I'm joining all the gang hatching ducklings at the moment.

Got in from work yesterday and didn't even look in the incubator as they are not due till Thursday and then a movement caught my eye.

By this evening they were joined by 2 more little
cuties.

And these little guys hatched in a courtyard where I worked today. They are not the first hatch either!

Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.

I'm sure they will be fine. Ducklings are a walk in the park compared to goslings! And although there are loads more to hatch even if I just have these 4 from the post ones I will be happy (a couple of my ducks eggs accidentally found their way into the incy too).

I am going to introduce the ducklings to my chinese goose next week when they are a little bigger. Daisy is a funny goose. She is a couple of years old and has never been broody and hatched but she is fascinated with ducklings and really protective of them. She even takes on 4-5 week old ducklings and watches over them and they now follow her around. If I can get her to take on these ones it will mean they can be out of the house a bit sooner but still protected.

In a year like this when everything has been so late they will probably only have one brood. Like mallards they can have another if the weather is better.

Ah, but if you have an incubator you can have as many broods as you like (well as long as they keep laying ferile eggs) :)

An incubator is a dangerous thing! It can be very hard to stop filling them when they are empty. :tongue2:

The downside of not having a broody is that you have to do all the looking after when they hatch.

Have you been spying on me Kate filling my incubator up with 35 quail eggs only 4 hours after it was emptied?!!

 :D :D :D

Well I'm putting away my incys for a while. I have 1 little fella left in who is not doing very well. Needed a bit of help to get out and don't think is going to do which is a real shame as it has the most interesting and unusual colouring. Never had one with colouring like it and must be a Patrick baby but can't work out who's mum. Will have to wait till next year to hatch again and hopefully get another.

Do have 12 happy, healthy ducklings so a happy girl!

(might pop a few quail eggs in later in the year!) :tongue2:

That is a good result with the ducklings, fingers crossed for the poorly one.

I have 6 quail chicks at the moment and 5 bantam chicks.  My quail ladies are getting a bit old (one passed away this week) so I had to set mine sooner rather than later.  Will try and get some photos sorted this week.
