charlotte & pentland javlin
« on: June 09, 2013, 08:58 »
Hi all
could anybody let me know when charlotte & pentland javlin are ready to dig up?
Is it when the flower buds start to show, when the flowers bloom or when they start to die off? Ive had conflicting information doing a web search
Thanks

You can dig as soon as you like BUT before flowering you will get a few small spuds, after flowering you should get more slightly larger spuds, and if you wait until the shaws die back they will be bigger again. Choice is yours, early pickings or bigger crop, 'tis a dilemma
I was put on this earth to accomplish a certain number of things; right now I am so far behind I will never die.

No rules, eat them when you want to.

I'd have a furtle among the roots of 1 plant and see if they're the size you want to eat yet, as already said they are slow this year  ;)

I've got charlotte: Second early and should be 12 weeks. BUT they took 7 weeks to show!
Locally everything is 5 weeks behind, including the clover because the pigeons whizzed my brassicas.
I have been told that Cheshire potatoes are in the shops at £3 a kilo. ???
Could be another 3/4 weeks yet.

Not all varieties produce flowers and those that do can be erratic so flowering is not always a useful indicator. I tend to work on weeks from planting but even that has been thrown by the awful spring we've had this year. Mum's advice is the best...have a furtle under soil and see if you can find any potatoes. If not, leave them.

I am also a firm believer in furtling before digging.

My FEs have been in 12 weeks and are not ready even for that yet - end of June will be time to grub about fer me  8)

I do envy you all, and all this talk of how far on your potatoes are.

I will be planting potatoes today. Nadine and Stemster, but only after a few hours double digging to prepare the grouind.
Breaking new ground.............literally!

My PJ 1st Earlies took 7 weeks to show and only now at the 10 week stage they are 6 inches high.
I live in Cheshire & none of the shops have 'Cheshire's' in yet.

I think that when they do come out in the shop's there will be a glut all ready at one time.

I think the 12 week 'guideline' may be a bit misleading this year as April was wet and cold and May was cooler than usual, everything (here 'oop north' anyway) is several weeks behind what we've got used to expecting. My spuds are looking well now but have taken longer to get going than usual.
