Sometimes Uchiki Kuri has an old brown corky layer on the outside of the seed, which takes ages to break down  :(
I find they germinate better if you pick this layer off carefully so as not to damage the seed casing  :)

Thanks. I'll try that, although it's getting a bit late in the year now.

I've lost 2 of my spaghetti squash! >:( :(

They gave up the ghost - dunno why, the other 2 are ok but I am annoyed.
The 'Honey Bear' squash seem to be doing just fine.

Just lost my first cucumber - just upped and died as they are wont to do. Luckily I have a few replacements. So far the courgettes seem OK - time will tell.

Cucumbers are such divas!  One of mine has been looking half dead for over a week but the tip still looks ok. Whether it will pull through I don't know but I fear the worst  :nowink:

I planted my first courgettes today, a Striato and a Golden Dawn.

I'm thinking I just might stick a couple of spaghetti squash seeds in the ground where the 2 died and see what happens!
No loss if they don't come up but you never know :tongue2:

I have quite an extensive range of Winter Squash coming on this year and they have all taken FOREVER. I'm talking 4 weeks to first leaves showing! Don't give up, they may still be in there.

mine too - I usually sow my cucurbits about the 3rd week in April or thereabouts when we've (usually) had a warm spell but it never happened this year  :(  So I waited and waited and waited until mid-May when I had no option otherwise it would be getting too late.  Massive sowing session and the trays in the greenhouse - despite it being warm during the day, I just think the nights have been too cold.  Mine started to germinate the other week, first the Blue Kuri and then nothing ... then since Sunday of the bank holiday weekend when we got hot sunshine, they've all been making an appearance.  Butternut still struggling to germinate, cucumber and courgettes only just starting but they are all popping up like weeds.  My biggest concern now is that it is lot later than usual for germinating squash so will all depend on the weather being kind this summer.

More likely to have been the cold. I had to put loads of no-shows back into the heated propagator and try again. Some came up shortly after that  :)

Not one of the 8 Crown Prince seeds that I sowed have germinated.

I bought them from a supplier on eBay called Premier Seeds, really disappointing.

I have sown another batch of 10 hoping they will get going.

There seeds are usually great but this year all squash have taken forever to get going, my harlequins have been in for two weeks and one is showing today. The harlequin were soaked too by a fellow plot member, she soaks them in a seaweed solution till they start to open and even then they took forever.

I got too many packets of seed really this year, In case of poor germination. You guessed It, I sowed half in mid April, ( around  30 seed) and 29 came up. 16 went in the greenhouse border and are massive now, picking regularly, but gave loads away. Same with the second sowing for outdoors. Next year I'll get less seed and poor germination and end up with not enough.

I think temperature is probably  the answer, i germinate mine on a warm window sill above a radiator and got  100% success rate.

They like it warm !
