Seasons greetings all!

There are lots of lovely molehills on verges around and about at present.
A friend's mother once told me they were good for the garden and they do indeed look lovely and loamy but something tells me to leave them be...

1) Would you likely bring in viruses/mankiness by transporting unknown soil onto the allotment from elsewhere - thus making the lovely loamy molehills less of an attraction?

2) Is it technically theft to remove mole hills from public verges?

What do you think?

Thanks
Vicky :D

They make great seed compost.  Less likely to contain clubroot or white rot than garden soil.

If you bung it in a hot oven( on a tray) for 15 mins you will have great sterile john inns tpye compost. You can plant most seeds in this and just as WG says.
Technically yes it is an offence to remove any soil from a pubic place, but the police would need to be very sure that by doing so you where commiting a nuisance or causing damage or obstucting the highway.
Most officers would once you explained just wonder if you were safe out on your own.

My father took a public footpath route to work through fields with mole hills for approx. 30 years.

He always took a bag & shovel to bring them back home, and used them for growing tomatoes.

Our back garden ended up about 100mm higher than those of the neighbours!

excellent!

If I limit mole hill removal to the Christmas season they will hopefully dismiss it as festive japery or be too busy to worry about mad looking women shovelling mole hills...ace!

The council were round clearing leaves from outside our offices today and the workmen jokingly asked if I'd like some leaves - they were a bit surprised when I produced some sacks from the car  :D

Have a nice Christmas everyone - if anyone is at a loose end and passing through Scunthorpe, you'd be very welcome to join my mole hill hunting.... what an offer!
