Can I put weedkiller on fruit tree suckers that are a couple of feet away from the plant?Or will it go back to the main plant?thanks

Hi Flump - depends of the tree but my preference would be just to keep cutting them back rather than risk weed killer. Hopefully if you keep doing this then you will get less suckers. Also make sure that the tree is not under stress and that it has enough water as that can cause suckers to grow.

For non grafted trees you can use the suckers to produce more plants but not for grafted plants - again it really depends on what the type of tree is.

The suckers are coming from the roots of the tree so weedkiller will get into the tree's system. As  virtually all fruit trees are grafted onto a rootstock they won't come true so just keep cutting them off. I have the same problem with one of my plum trees so I just snip em off with secateurs when they appear.

Plums seem to be particularly bad for suckering as mine does it too and I keep hacking away all the new recruits.
