Pinching out chilli plants
« on: May 09, 2013, 12:40 »
Hi all, Should i be pinching out the top new growth on my Lemon Drop Chilli plants? They are about a foot high now from the soil to the top of the plants.
Has anyone done this with Lemon Drops before? Ive been told that only certain varieties are worth pinching out.
Cheers.

If it's growing straight up and only produces one flower bud at the top, then whether peppers or chillis - I pinch the bud off.
Otherwise they don't seem to make any more  :(

I've never actually pinched the tops out of any of my peppers or chillies, but I usually get loads of lemon drops!

I may try it with a few though, as it would be nice if some of them didn't get so tall!  :)

Do they not split in two at some point? Or is that only certain varieties?

How tall do they get? Mine have not grown at all in the last 2 weeks, and I am worried they are sulking.

The F2 chenzos have tiny flower buds on them already (at 5 inches tall) and the jalapenos and habaneros are all bigger than the lemon drops. I though the latter were supposed to be more vigorous?

I don't pinch my peppers out either - never have.

How tall do they get?

Just this side of huge  year before last mine filled the gable end of the greenhouse.  Mine are also sulking at the moment, but it's still early.

I thought it was just mine growing in chicken poo Lardman!  My lemon drops regularly get to 4ft tall, sometimes a bit taller.

Actually Surbie, these ones are your lemon drops!  My old ones didn't germinate, so agapanthus kindly sent me a few of the ones you kindly sent her!    ;) ;)

Glad to hear they are up.  :D Lacewing sent me lots, then I also got some from my brother for The Day Aunty Won't Let Us Mention, so I suddenly had masses! It only seemed fair to share the joy.  :)

Mine are in need of repotting out of the paper cups, Should I go straight into 6 inch or 10inch pots. I won't be able to keep them in anything bigger than 10inch as don't have the window space

I cant see any reason why you cant pot them into their final size pots, mine went from 3" pots to 8" ones and thats where they are staying whether they like it or not. they are doing fine at the moment and im getting flower buds developing too. (i am noticing some sort of leaf browning on two of the taller plants though which is worrying) ill post a piccy later.

I'm no disease expert but my thoughts are too much fertiliser if you have started using any? It doesn't look like burns caused by watering in the middle of the day because its distinctly around the vaines. If its just the odd leaf I would pinch it off and bin it

Generally speaking, all peppers will crop more if they are topped.

Hi

I have a couple of plants that are now about a foot high.  They look good, but not flowering as yet.  You say it's good to cap off, but at what height?

Thanks
