Suitable veg
« on: May 05, 2013, 18:27 »
Not posted for a while but I do pop in occasionally. Just cleared two beds both 12ft x 4ft and wondering what to put in them. Don't mind watering but haven't got a lot of time for anything else so things that will grow though semi neglect would be good. One of the beds is quite dry the other seems to retain water OK. Both get a mixture of sun and dappled shade.

Thought I might try some lettuce and dwarf beans. Any other suggestions would be appreciated

Pamela

A row of peas for a start. Then another. That's one bed taken care of.

Repeat for the other!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I should have expected that!

I am going to grow some pea shoots as they are easy and taste delicious. Does that count?

No that's pea cruelty, cutting them off in their prime!

Potatoes?

I had a bed that was put in before I took on my plot and I never knew they were there until I dug it over and filled 2 carrier bags.

They were certainly neglected and never watered.
When weeding, the best way to know if its a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull it.

If it comes out easy, it was a valuable plant !

What about a 3 sisters bed - squash, climbing beans and sweetcorn?  The squash tends to roam around and cover the ground so few weeds.  If you chose beans like borlotti that you can dry, you could pretty much leave it until harvest time  :)

So you can pretty much never water the 3 sisters?

Or did I misinterpret that ?
