putting sweetcorn in the greenhouse
« on: May 03, 2013, 18:25 »
I have about 20 sweetcorn plants about 8 inches high.  I am running out of space at home and wonder if they would be okay to go into a unheated greenhouse.  I would put them in a cardboard box.  They would be off the floor.  I live in the North East of England

Bearing in mind that my greenhouse is in Devon...
I germinated mine in the 'den' and put them out in an unheated greenhouse about 3 weeks ago - they are doing fine (and have even had a few additional ones germinate since I put them out there)
I would imagine that unless temperatures really take a turn for the worse you should be ok now - believe that they grow best at 14-15 degrees celsius or higher.
I'm trying to wait another couple of weeks before planting them out on the plot - but I've got space issues in the greenhouse now...
Anyhow - good luck with 'em.  ;)

I moved mine from the house to the GH last week and they are fine.. well so far!! Just be wary of frost and protect them if it is likely to be a frost.

What are the temperatures like at night in the North east, Chickpeacurry?

If they fall much below 10C In your unheated greenhouse,  you might find that your sweetcorn plants find it a bit chilly still

It fell to just above zero in mine on Monday

That's why I say to get a max/min thermometer - so you have some idea of what's going on with night time temperatures in your greenhouse ;)

My first lot (which I know I planted too early now - too eager) got eaten in the greenhouse so mine are staying put inside until it's warm enough to go outside on the allotment. They are doing nicely though :-)
My husband's a water sign, I'm an earth sign, together we make mud :-)
