I would like to try growing a grape vine. I live in the south of England and have a greenhouse and a conservatory, but would like to grow one outside if possible. Don't really have a south facing wall unfortunately... where would be best to try and grow it?

It is possible to grow outside where you are. The main thing it needs is support, be it wire or a trellis or whatever. If you've got a sheltered spot or somewhere that traps the warmth, so much the better. They are a long term investment, like fruit trees.

Thanks, have a big wooden gazebo type structure which already has a wisteria growing over part of it. Reckon I could train the grape vine up the other side...

Not sure whether you want to try dessert or wine making varieties; it looks like you want to grow outside where white varieties are more tolerant of cooler conditions. I have two planted, chose Seyval Blanc as a white dessert and Boskoop Glory as a Black as it is comfortable with the cooler conditions outside. I am not sure if you have much chalk down your way in any case talk to a local expert for advice on which variety suits your soil. If you can't find one talk to victoria's nursery; they have a good selection of vines and their cultivation advice looks okay.
