Tomato seedling true leaves look deformed??
« on: April 24, 2013, 14:28 »
I have successfully germinated 9 roma tomato seedlings. The cotyledons are large, green and look healthy as are the stems.
I have them in a 9 cell modular tray on kitchen windowsill (south-east facing).
However, true leaves are starting to emerge but don't look healthy - very small and deformed (don't actually look like true leaves) apart from 1 seedling!!! Not really sure what to do.
Should I just wait or pot them on into bigger pots???

They may simply be sufferring from too much direct sun scorching the emerging leaves!  Have you a photo?
I would pot them on soon.

Difficult to see much in the picures.  I understand why you would be worried, but I reckon they will be fine in the end.  Did you use normal potting compost that you have used before, and do you know what varieties they are?

They are tomato roma variety.
I have grow 3 successfully earlier which have 5-6 true leaves now.
In this set of 9,
1. four seedlings seems to have shrivelled true leaves
2. one has ok true leaves
3.other four, they true leaves haven't emerged yet.

So I have potted them all on in MPC as for previous three plants. All roots look good and healthy as well as seedling leaves and stems. So suck it and see I think .. grow them on and see what happens.
I only actually want 6 -7 plants finally as they are heavy yielding.
I think that perhaps some seedlings with funny true leaves have received too much sunlight and got scorched as suggested or perhaps I'm panicking too early . Min dyou the video mumstig posted was an interesting too but as these are same variety, I would expect same type of true leaves.

Will keep you guys posted and try and learn to use my camera better for future posts... ::)
