Parsnips Germinated!!
« on: April 13, 2013, 19:00 »
So, I've actually got some parsnips to germinated for the first time ever!!

Now, as they are in loo rolls, I don't want them to fork. So when should I plant them out and should I kill the weakest seedling or will they push each other out, like with beetroot?

Germination rate is pretty good. See picture

When weeding, the best way to know if its a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull it.

If it comes out easy, it was a valuable plant !

Pinch out to a single seedling and plant asap - within a few days at most -honestly! the tap root really does grow a lot quicker than the tops do.

Plant as soon as you can. It may be best to leave multiple seedlings in place for now and then take all but one out once they have produed their first true leaves. That way you have some insurance against slugs or accidents with a hoe.

OK, so I planted half of them today as I want to see how much down the root had got, and the ones I pinched out were about 3 inches long, so there is another 2 inches until it hits the bottom of my richy pots.

When I plant the rest, how deep should I plant them? And how much of the paper pot should be above the surface if any?

The ones I planted earlier, I covered up the whole pot and tore the paper slightly to bed it in.

Do not leave ANY of the paper above the surface. It will act as a wick as draw all the moisture out of the soil.

Just sufficiently deep enough to achieve this is OK.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?
