Although potatoes can survive in the soil over winter (as many people find out to their dismay when "volunteers" start sprouting up in the middle of their lettuce bed!) they will be destroyed if they become frozen solid.

That may be what's happened to yours - get your hand in the compost (if you can) and have a furtle around - if they're still intact there's still a good chance they will be OK.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

I stuck a thermometer in the ground today just to see what's going on, and it was 6C after todays sunshine ::)

I'll see what's what at the weekend, some may go in then if it continues a tad milder, as it has been today ;)

I put some first earlies in my unheated polytunnel on January 20th. They also have fleece over them. No sign of them yet. Do you think they will have survived or not?

I'd have a rootle and see what's happened to them. I planted first earlies in my tunnel (polypots on top of beds) on Feb 24 under fleece and those are now up.

I will need the snow to disappear first at least before contemplating planting.  I was worried I would be behind as a result of going away on holiday in March.   Now I am worried that I will have to delay longer before sowing and planting anything!

Potatoes still chatting, the chits are rather longer than I would like to be honest.

Mine (Mayan Gold) went in on the 2nd March.   My Earlies are showing now so I have put fleece over them.
Swift went in Feb.16th.  Brave eh ?
