They'll be fine when planted, but I'd wait until the weather warms up a bit - it's still very cold out there, despite the date on the calendar  :(

I put some Kestrel out today. Do you reckon I have played a blinder then?

The soil temperature should be at least 6C before planting

I don't know how warm yours is - do you?   ;)

Errrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr, mayhap not quite that warm. I only put them in about dinner time. Only  a few in a raised bed. Would it be ok to get em back up and wait a while?

This time last year, I was planting mine tomorrow.

(That made sense to me!)
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Ah, we're talking on the same wavelength.

Of course, now that it's tomorrow, as compared to when I posted yesterday, this time last year is now today.

I think I'm going to be awkward and leave 'em in. If they don't do anything, I'll put some nice Maris pipers in in a couple of weeks (or when the heatwave subsides).
I tried it with toms last year to some success. They took ages to germinate in a cold greenhouse, but when they did, the plants were well sturdy and cropped better than most people's. Many around me had a terrible time with toms last year.

Personally I'd still wait although this time next year it may make it interesting describing when the spuds were planted the year before a week or two later than this time 12 months ago.

I'm not panicking.

I've planted in May before now and still had an excellent crop.

Of course you won't be harvesting your early spuds in June!

There is no point planting potatoes if the soil temperature is less than around 6C because they simply won't grow and could come to harm whilst they just sit there doing nothing.

Obviously there are variations across the UK but here, with a few inches still left of the weekend's snow (and snow showers today) there looks to be a long wait until even the air temperature reaches that figure, and soil temperatures at the depth spuds are planted will lag well behind any improvement when it does come.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

I put some first earlies in my unheated polytunnel on January 20th. They also have fleece over them. No sign of them yet. Do you think they will have survived or not?
