Frozen Tomato Plants
« on: March 24, 2013, 13:10 »
Hi All

Instead of growing my Tomatoes from seed this year I decided to get ahead and buy some plants. I have an 8 x 6 grrenhouse and put my Tomatoes in there. Owing to the realy bad weather they are not looking too good. I have a good parafin heater but is costing £8 a week in parafin, so decided to leave it off. I have brought my Tomatoes inside on my bedroom windowsill but dont know if they will recover. Any ideas?

Many thanks

Shaun

Sorry to say that if they've have a whiff of frost, they've had it.

They really need a minimum of 10C.

I have yet to sow my seeds destined for the unheated greenhouse and then the plants will spend a good few weeks indoors and the heated greenhouse before they see that.

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Plant's do not need buying until mid-may at the earliest, planting in the greenhouse 1st week of june. None of my tender plant's set eye's on the allotment until then. No matter what the weather.

Oh dear  :(

As others have said, those plants may well not recover.

Luckily there will be plants around for sale for quite a while yet. If you do buy more, keep them nice and cosy indoors, with plenty of light too, and not out them out in your greenhouse until it is a minimum of 10 C at night

If I met a 45 year old male called Shaun who looked like that I might have to rethink my orientation!  ::)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Ahhh, but we know why don't we?

Most of them know that it is too ealy and that the plants will die, then the gullible will just assume they've done smethign wrong and go back and buy some more!

I suspect that the propagator has not been able to maintain that setting.

In my experience, even if the cold has not killed them, when it's been sufficient to turn them this colour, they rarely get going again.

Yes, last year all my tomato plants were thriving in the lovely sunny greenhouse in March, then May came and all my Moneymakes ones went blue and never recovered.  The Gardeners Delight survived the cold May though - just.

This year my tomatoes are still on my kitchen windowsill - with aluminium foil behind them (thanks for the tip DD!  :D ).
No matter how many plants I have in my garden, I can always find room for one more.
