When do the heat treated onion sets go in?  I ordered mine last Autumn but they have not arrived from Marshalls yet.

They despatch at the right time. They will come with specific planting instructions. You can't plant them in frozen soil anyway so you can relax a bit.  They deliver late March/Early April according to their website.

Heat treated onions have to be held at a certain temperature over several weeks so they will send them when they are ready.

You will find that they start slowly as they are drier than normal ones but they soon catch up. They do not bolt.

I have had heat treated Red Baron sets each year for the past 4.
They usually arrive last week in March or 1st week in April. I plant them within 7 days and I always get a fantastic crop.

Onion sets are generally sown as seed one year, very thickly, so as to produce stunted plants which dried off become sets.

Heat treating is a more complicated process which kills off the embryonic flower.

mine have just arrived from Moles X 3 varieties and look very good  - I will tip out into a tray in good light but cool conditions until soil is right in about 2 to 3 weeks -- always seems to work OK

My Heat Treated Sets New Fen Globe arrived from Marshalls today.  Too wet to plant today.
It will be interesting to see how they compare to the Autumn ones & the untreated Spring planting.
