intercropping question -
« on: March 10, 2013, 12:37 »
Ive planted a load of leeks and onions ........ what kind of crops can I intercrop with ? I assume that blockings light to the bulbs wont affect the alliums growth wise  as long as the intercrop is not too high ?    would salad stuff be okay ?

Onions grow poorly with competition from weeds or plants between them, so I expect the same would apply to leeks as well/

Yeah, some things arn't bothered by intercropping ... but onions REALLY struggle with any competition.

I would give it a miss for the entire allium family sorry.

Don't forget the weeding issue either.

If you inter-crop, you can't whizz a hoe down the rows!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Peppers, carrots, lettuce, beets and swiss chard all  get along fine with onions, just no kinds of peas or beans.
I have just sown White Lisbon spring onions alongside May Queen early lettuce in a trough in the cold greenhouse.

I have heard that inter-planting carrots and onions helps deter the carrot fly.

I was going to say the exact same thing!
Can't say my crops of either were great that year! :D

Probably - it's the smell of the onions that is supposed to put the carrot fly off, and the smell of the carrots that is supposed to deter the onion fly, so I should think so. :)
