Strawberry plants
« on: February 28, 2013, 13:43 »
Hey

My strawberry plants are up for replacement this year - I was wondering what to get.

I want a plant that will produce in a short period of time as I'd like to make jam this year.

Ideally I'd like to try Tenira but can't seem to find them anywhere.  A local nursery has Elsanta, which seem tempting but are maybe a bit tarnished in my eyes because of tasteless supermarket strawberries.

Any ideas for a good reliable cropper?

Thanks in advance for any help

Thanks! I could have sworn that I looked at that page a couple of hours ago and it said they'd sold out, which is what prompted this thread.

I'll place an order then.

EDIT - I checked with Ken Muir and it was my mistake. Anyway, all's well that ends well.

Just for interest, everything in supermarkets is tasteless!

I bought 30 Elsanta from Marshall's last year for £11.50 I think it was on special offer which I think is always on.  Planted them in May, and from June to end August picked over 11lbs of strawberries.  They were lovely!!

For a long cropping season it might be worth getting a few of each:

early, mid season and late croppers.

Last year we put our plants in the ground and they look to have established themselves quite well.
From seeds we have Wild, Alpine (for that authentic old school bubblegum flavour) & an F1 called Sarian all sowed from packets.

Cambridge Favourite is a delicious mid season that I have tasted myself and highly recommend for flavour, the late ones we got as runners from a friend and she does not know what they are ::) but helps stretch the cropping season somewhat, remember to keep the slugs away and the birds from snatching them!!!

Happy growing!

Plantoffers.com have 24 'irresistable' runners for £17 - always worth keeping an eye on their index.

  5x £9.95
10x £18.95
20x £32

not sure how good value that is though.

Honeyoye are nice too (early to mid season)

I have just ordered 10 Cambridge Favourite for a Mother's Day present for my mum to go in her planter from R V Roger for £9, which seems good value at half the price.  They are a good quality supplier too.

Honeyoye are a favourite of mine.
I normally grow a combination - Honeyoye, Elsanta, Cambridge Fav, Florence and Eros (the latter can be BIG strawberries but very good taste. :)

Elsanta are tasteless when purchased from store because they are harvested before perfect ripeness at source. If you harvest at the correct ripeness in the country of origin, doesn't matter the variety, the culture or the country, it will taste a damn site better and equal many of the old favourites. That said, it won't travel.

Gonna try Gariguette, Combaille , whiteberrys, and Florence for the new patch.
