In a cool, but frost-free, light place where air can get around them.

Thanks for posting this as I also have some questions.  They are on the window sill of my garden shed which I imagine gets very cold in these nights and is cool in the days.  The advice I was given was similar to that of arugula above and what I've done is the best thing I can think to do.

I bought 3 packs of 10 from B&M yesterday for £1.49 a pack (not sure if that's a good price or not?), Maris Pipers, Desirees and King Edwards.  They had big long spindly shoots coming off them and I have pulled them all off.  I wonder if this is the right thing to do?

We've just done our early potatoes by put them in egg trays and have them up the corner in our front porch, and noticed just this morning that they have all chitted well.

They're best indoors, in a cool room, near a window to be safe from the frost. Even a shed probably won't be frost-free. Egg boxes are a good container for chitting. Plastic isn't so good.

Mine are in an unheated conservatory. It's north facing so it doesn't get too hot in summer, but in winter it's always in the 5-10 range. Seems to work well.

We have a shed & greenhouse but  neither have any heat in them, where as the porch as no heat, but because it's part of the cottage there will be residual heat passing through from the inside. They looked well this morning at 03.45 anyway ;)

I put mine in the chittery (which is the back bedroom, no heating on, on a shelf just to the left of a southwest facing window). Never had any failures yet.

I don't have an unheated room and no room in my shed which is probably not frost free anyway.  I have put them on a windowsill and they are starting to chit already.  what should I do if they are too well ahead before planting time?

That's OK, chitting is the same process and length of time for all kinds of potatoes.

I'm looking for the answer to this one as well.  I've pulled all the long spindly chits off mine when i bought them, I hope this is ok?
