Best small cauli
« on: February 20, 2013, 21:10 »
I'm looking for a cauli variety that'll give me a quick crop on smaller plants - any ideas? I saw one on DT Brown called Nemo that seems the right sort, and another small variety I've seen is Igloo. But anyone tried these or other similar caulis, any recommendations for a good one to try?

I'm trying a variety called Igloo this year. Apparantly they can be close spaced for small heads or planted further apart for larger ones.

You can find them or sale at numerous places on Ebay.

'Snowball' are supposed to be miniature cauli's like Aunt Sally says.

Good luck - I have found them impossible :D

"Nautilus" are a fast maturing early variety and suitable for sowing now.

For smaller caulis = grow closer together - simples!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Yeah.  My Snowball were more "Golfball" :D
Sometimes my plants grow despite, not because of, what I do to them.

Well at least you got that far gremlin!
Mine just didn't do anything.

I did just once get a couple of caulis and almost as soon as the white florets appeared they went mouldy! :D

They are not the easiest of veg and my record so far has been dismal

Anyway, got some plants overwintering in the cold greenhouse that were sown last autumn and so far, so good  :)  Nice healthy looking plants that are growing steadily, waiting for the weather to improve so they can be hardened off and set loose on the plot  :)

If I manage to produce a cauli I shall be sooooooooooo chuffed, even if it is tiny

I think the winter cauliflowers, i.e. those planted in summer and harvested winter/spring, are easier than the summer ones we are sowing now!

Cauliflowers don't like heat, that's one reason. (Hence don't grow them in propagators!).

Also, if you, or your plot suffer from club root, it is not active in the cold weather. That's another!

My site does not suffer club root but I can see why that would make a difference.  It's the heat for me as I don't really have any suitable shaded areas on the plot.  Last years were pretty good for some reason!
