Ahh - you're all lovely to me :)

Must get my own seed order sorted next.  Much sorting out of the box in the shed to work out what's still likely to be good,

That's just given me an idea - I'll write up an article on checking seed viability.
Check out our books - ideal presents

This might help : http://www.chat.allotment-garden.org/viewtopic.php?p=45449#45449 - it seems fairly accurate for any within my personal experience.

Thanks David - there's an article on seed life
http://www.allotment-garden.org/vegetable/general/seed-storage-life.php

I was thinking of how to tell viability - got tied up sorting a problem though.  Still, something else to do as the winter monsoon carries on.

Well I'm sorry old hands, but that's a point of no use if you do not get the year it was harvested in.

Also, wherever you look you tend to find different numbers of years for different seeds.

So doing a test run, as John initially suggested is well on the menue.

Gobs, you're right. You can have seeds within their use by on the packet and none come up.  I got 100% on some courgette seeds that were 5 years past it.

Funny thing is French seeds seem to have much longer use by dates and better germination rates. I can't see why that should be at all.

I've updated this page:
http://www.allotment-garden.org/vegetable/general/seed-storage-life.php
it now includes average germination times for the seeds along by lifespan and how to test if they're still viable.

When I wrote it originally I had intended to put that in but it took a while to get the information and I hadn't  got round to it.
