I have been making my plans as to what seeds I want to get for my containers, but wondered whether I should get direct from companies, or from local garden centres etc?

If I were to wait until the garden centres etc get their new stocks back in after Christmas, is it likely they sell the full range that T and M fo example sell?

Reason I ask is that I have seen some seeds that are specifically for containers by Mr Fothergills and T and M, but wonder if I will be able to buy every one I want locally (to save postage) or whether there is a chance some may only be available direct??

Some garden centres are better for seeds than others, but I find that you get a better price and a greater choice in catalogues, also get them delivered well in time if ordered early. Just as per price difference the postage you pay does not matter, it is usually 99p, some companies don't charge anything.

Woolworths quite often do a good deal on Mr F seeds, in Spring, either a BOGOF or 3 for 2, but choice is restricted.

In view of the wet year last year, I bought some in the T&M half price sale, some in B&Q as they were the type I wanted at a good price, and the rest from a catalogue.

Think I've got all i need now, just need to find where I put the Cobra French Bean seeds.

My own feeling is you put a lot of effort into growing and good seeds get you off to a good start.

I find mail order better, especially outfits like Seeds of Italy. That doesn't stop me making impulse purchases in Wilkos, Woolies, B&Q and the 99p shop.

I know that there are any number of other factors involved - but in previous years we bought seeds in garden centres, last year we bought from Dobies (mail order) primarily and had much higher success rates in germination across the board, so will be doing the same again this year.

I prefer to buy my seeds at the local nursery (not kids), this is because I have a philosophy of supporting local shops where ever possible, I have found that T&M seeds germinate far better than others like fothergills etc, just my experience, also if they are seeds I need I can order them through the chap. Sorry John will try and support the site in other ways.  

Edit: I never buy from B&Q etc, hate the corporates and I aint a corporate whore  :twisted:
