You could always grow comfrey on it, good deep rooted plant, likes damp soil  and will provide fertilizer for you. See here for some more details

Don't forget to dig in some grit as you double dig

hi everyone, many thanx for your suggestions
the plot holder next to mine told me that he actually sunk in the mud right up to the top of his wellies!! so the patch altogether is about 10 ft long by 5. we are on a hill although the rest of the plot is fine.
so, me thinks i will double dig ,add more soil,in the hope that by spring it'll be dryer !
what deep rooting crops could i grow to help the soil?
thanx again  :)

Any of the brassica family, but make sure that you tread your plants in they like a firm soil.
However if it really is a bit of a mud hole as your fellow lottie holder says then you might be better off looking at ways of draining the area.
You try could double digging plus grit and adding soil first for next season then if that does not work give the drainage a go.

First thing to do, as noshed touched on, is to find out whether it is wet because (a) water from the surface can't get away or, (b) water is coming out of a collapsed or damaged drain nearby.

If you do dig a drain, remember this dries out the area downhill from the drain - not uphill from it.

Also as I said earlier, get down on your tummy and look at the lie of the land.
You could be surprised and delighted at how you much you can see from this position(No WG Dont even go there.)

A flat area suddenly has all sorts of dips and rises. You could cure the problem just by knowing how level or not it really is.

If it's any help, our site is on a slope with a lane running through it (across the slope) - the plots at the top seem to have a big waterlogged area around 6ft running along the lane.  This area was very deep under water early in the year but dried out by spring time.  The plotholders seem to just work with it.

Milton Keynes - Quite an experiament in urban design with its grid square layout, linear parks and cycle ways.  I suppose in order to maintain the original ethos the local council put in place regulations which it thought would prevent degredation of the area.
Scruffy old chicken houses in back gardens, smelly birds and rats would not fit in

Break the mould Henry, turn your back to the Telescreen, a few hens would give you so much pleasure  :D
