Active pests?
« on: February 01, 2013, 18:30 »
I've inspected my broad beans today after all the snow, ice, and cold. They've been outside since November. Very few losses due to the weather, but there are quite a few have been well munched by some pest or other. Some which I still have in pots in the GH have been slightly nibbled too. I cant see anything resident on the plants. Any suggestions chaps and chapesses?

Have they been nibbled along the edges of the leaves?

if so it could be
pea and bean weevil

No, whatever it is, they are munching great big lumps out of the leaves, not just nibbling the edges. I wouldn't have thought it was weevils as they don't emerge until much later in the year. My plants are getting chomped right now.

I'd have said pigeons but if the ones inside are the same it can't be them

The ones outside are under a metal chickenwire arch. Wouldn't have thought pigeons would go under it. Is it not too cold for snails? I'll have to go down with a torch and see if I can see anything.

It will be tiny black or grey slugs. You will probably not see them with a torch.

Anything to sort them out?

Blue pellets of death will deal with them
