Rhubarb crowns
« on: January 25, 2013, 16:47 »
I have received my rhubarb crowns which are obviously from divided plants but they still quite a size , drum roll please for a tepid question, which way round or up, there's what I call the root end a flat top and a cut side, I assume the flat top is set almost level with the top of the soil.  The bit that looks like root obviously at the bottom?

The cut bits are roots and the bit that looks like dead leaves should face up. If your plot gets water logged you want he tops just out of the soil if not then level

I have taken them right out the packing I guess the pinkish white tips are new top growth so they should face up which means they will planted with a flat bottom see pic

took ours out of a half barrel at the end of last year, planted in the front garden and had a few big bits of root left over, these were just plumped into a hole between 2  of the other crowns, the first buds are just coming up from the crowns, one has leaves already, whether the roots will take is a case of wait and see.
