Pointless free gift
« on: January 25, 2013, 11:02 »
Just received my latest seed order. The company had added the most pointless free gift of seeds you could imagine. A packet of mixed tomato seeds containing 11 different varieties, none of them separately identified. So if you sowed them you'd get 22 plants, some of which are yellow, some cherry type, some are bush type and so on. Chocolate fire-guards come to mind

Yes - I think mixtures probably work better with plants like annual summer flowers!

Having said that, I did actually buy a packet of mixed sweet pepper seeds - some were really excellent, some very average, but of course there was no way of knowing which seed was which the following year!    :nowink:
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Even if you did decide a mixed pack was OK and see what you get, its a bit of a pain they have mixed bush and cordon types.  You could be pinching out side shoots that you need  ::)

You'd think they would stick to something people do grow as mixtures like salad leaves, radishes or oriental greens.  Bet the majority of those free tomato seeds never get sown  ::)  :)

A mixed bag sounds great to me!

I spend a fortune buying lots of different variaties!

I think it just comes down to if they told you which type of tomato they are (vine or bush).

A mixed bag of specified varieties - good.

A mixed bag of unspecified varieties - not so good.

As said, different varieties need different treatment, cordon, indeterminate, indoor, outdoor etc.. It's not at all like mixed salad leaves where one growing method covers all.

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I got those free seeds too, you're right, they are a waste of money and space.  There were a few varieties which I would've liked to try if they had been packed separately.
I think I might send some feedback to the seed company, they might label them next time.

Most often it's just a bunch of seeds that fell out of sorting bins and rather than waste them, they're packaged as mixed seeds and given as bonuses.  ::)

Quickcrop sent me a free bag of "lettuce Surprise Mix LET 10" because I asked for their catalogue - I'm wondering if the suprise is that they are actually something else  other than lettuce (must just be my sense of humor I guess)
