McCullough 740 chainsaw problem
« on: January 22, 2013, 21:21 »
I have bought the above chainsaw and although it starts I cannot get it to run for more than a few seconds. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to keep it running. Many Thanks

A few more details would help
how old
have you just bought it and it  had the symptoms when you did
have you adjusted or cleaned anything

Thanks for the manual link. I followed instructions and checked fuel line and filter and checked the spark plug. Although the spark plug was sparking I decided to replace with another and it starts first time and runs OK as long as you hold the throttle a little. It wont idle fast enough without stalling and stopping. I will try and fiddle some more with the carb.

Sounds exactly like my Stihl. It demands constant babying to keep it idling  >:(

Try adjusting the HA screw first.

Thanks for replying.

Have altered the screw but it makes no difference, does this mean I have to strip the carb right down?

Is it just the slow running you can't get right  or problem at  full throttle as well?

If it starts and revs ok I would persevere with adjustment.does the carb have 3 adjusting screws ?

edit could you post a picture of saw showing the carb?

The two screws side by side should be high and low speed mixture screws, can you see a "H" and "L"  anywhere on the case or carb?

If your having problems with the file size when posting pictures try a small application called shrinkpic.if you set it to maximum compression it will automatically resize for you..

I don't have a lot of time right now but will return to the thread later.
