They may be sweet red ones completely different from the old sour green ones?

Sunshine band, I don't plan on waiting at all.  In referring to the move, I meant that I don't have time to change things around such as beds etc, but will use it as is for this season.

Thanks for the tip on the courgette roots - so good to know!  I've grown many courgettes in veggie gardens before, but never in compost, so it will be a real adventure!

OK, you all have me convinced.  Just for my new friends here - the gooseberry/spikey stranger bush will stay for this season.  Maybe I will learn to like it!

Glad I misunderstood you re growing on your plot

Easy way to prune that goosberry is to cut out anything in the middle of the bush right down to the ground to leave a cup shape.

Then cut back the remaining main branches to half of last year's growth (which is paler in colour)

Then prune back side shoots to one or two leaf buds

It flowers on old wood so you won't reduce fruiting, but you will be able to actually pick the fruit wihtout lacerating your arms

Give it  a dollop of manure or some Fish Blood and Bone by the end of Feb and it will pay you back happily  :D
