White carrots?
« on: November 29, 2007, 13:23 »
Just pulled some carrotts that were left in from the previous plot owner and mixed in with the few I got was a white carrot.  Is this ok?  I wondered whether it was a parsnip, but don't they have different leaves?

If it is an albino carrot is it ok to eat?
On the very steep learning curve of organic veg growing!!!!

There's a slight difference between the leaves and the taste of a carrot, a parsnip and a horseradish mushroom!!!!!

I had a couple of white carrots come up in mine too (yes they were carrots).  I ate one raw but it was not as good a flavour as the orange ones.

I guess they were either rogue seeds got in while being packaged or a sport (genetic mutant).

So there's no problem with it?  I didn't know if it was a sign of some deficiency in the soil.

When we went picking pumpkins over half term, one of my friends lads found a white pumpkin.  Was going to make a lantern out of it though!

I grew the 'White Belgium' from here this year: http://www.thomasetty.co.uk/vegetables/seeds_carrots.pdf - well worth growing, lovely flavour and they far outperformed the expensive F1 carrot seed that I'd also bought.

white carrots have been available here for some time, along with red and purple. Most likely, some white seed hopped the packaging line and landed in your packet. I once got romaine seed with escaped oak leaf lettuce seeds as well. The whites can be tasty but lack the orange pigment, which I believe contains the lycopene, important for better vision. In France, they grow sand carrots which simply have an odd texture.
White pumpkins have been around for a while as well.

That's hilarious Gobs!  I quote:

Only men are admitted. But they manage to have a damn good time all the same. Wolfgang Hillen, the treasurer and secretary explains, ‘Our club goals are to contribute to society happenings and to make jokes or silly things … Our working life is serious, so we need in that club fun for our life.’

Fun's one thing, but men only... They wouldn't get away with that over here, would they Aunty!
