Are peas self polinating?
« on: December 31, 2012, 23:36 »
I believe that they are and plan to grow several varieties next year. I wish to save my own seed for the following year so my real question is, do I need to fleece them to protect against cross pollination? Happy new year.

There are a couple of varieties of Courgette that don't need pollination in order to set fruit  :)

Peas and French beans are quite unusual in that the self-fertile flowers self-pollinate even before they "open for business" (I'm sure DD will correct me if I'm wrong!)

Many flowering veg are self-fertile (i.e. they don't need pollen from another flower to set seed) but they need varying degress of "help" to actually self-pollinate.

Most chillies, peppers and tomatoes need little more than a shake to distribute the pollen inside the flowers, whereas runner beans need a bee to land in the right place to "trip" the flowers.

Most Courgettes, cucumbers and squashes have separate male and female flowers so are not self-fertile (but see Mum's previous post or I'm in trouble!)  ;)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Just to save everyone the trouble of checking : the courgette variety MoS is referring to does not require pollinating as it is parthenogenic ......... and is called Parthenon

and is very useful early in the year in a polytunnel. We usually have fresh courgettes by the end of April  :D
