Planting bulbs (very) early
« on: December 26, 2012, 09:08 »
Received some Lillium and Fritallirie bulbs from my brother for Christmas however after he bought them he noticed it did say to plant them in August. I could wait but I am sort of worried they will just dry out and die if left in a cupboard for that long, but maybe that's wrong.

If I did plant them in the spring then is there a chance they would just rot in the ground or would they survive to flower the next year? I am up in the north east of Scotland if that makes a difference.

Can you pot them up and put them somewhere a bit sheltered fromm the worst of the cold and wet . Then they have a chance to make roots rather than just rot off - I certainly wouldn't wait until Spring to plant them.

I'd put them in a well drained pot and then in the cold frame. Put a bit of fine netting over the top - mice have always enjoyed tucking into my fritillaria bulbs for some reason.

I've purchased bulbs like liliums out of season and I've simply potted them up, watered lightly, and placed them somewhere cool and protect while they root.

Note: they will flower earlier than usual this year but once in the ground they'll flower at their proper time.
