Amaryllis help again
« on: December 20, 2012, 17:33 »
OK, so my bargain bulb I bought nearly 3 years ago is foxing me again.

It flowered the first year in spring as was bought cheaply in the sales after Christmas and potted up very late.  The first Christmas is was still in full growth so left it to build itself up after a rough start.

This year I have decreased water all summer but it showed no signs of die back and now not watered it for weeks.  It has wilted a bit, but is still green and not even looking like it will die back. Do I give up and start watering again  ?

In the wild (in Greece) they get no water at all during  summer as the soil gradually dries to dust, then in the late Autumn when it starts to rain, they start to flower.
Your bulb didn't get that treatment so it may not flower this winter, but I wouldn't think drying it off now would help, it's the wrong time of year.

It should start to show a flower stem over the next week or so, if it is going to flower.

I have been feeding it over this spring and summer when I was feeding the rest of the houseplants. It is very green and lush  :)

It loved the water the other day - completely back to life and blowing raspberries to me from the kitchen windowsill   No sign of a flower spike  ::)

I just water mine all year round, well when I remember about it. Started out with 1, got 5 now. Usually throw up flower spikes in the early new year.
