spuds query - when do they go in?
« on: November 28, 2007, 11:11 »
hi,

I'll be getting 6kg cara and 6kg pink fir apple seed pots.

When do they go in?

Assuming a 60% success rate and fertile soil, and good conditions, how many kg can I reasonably expect to harvest?

A lot of spuds. I'm guessing around 80 tubers in each pack, depending on size, have you got enough space allocated for them.

Your harvest would be hard to predict. Can range from nowt to loads.

As the weather will also have an impact, don't forget.

well, the soil is good, judging by the amount of earthworms in it. it's a clay loam. I need to add manure, and maybe sand, to "keep it open". i guess it's neutral/slightly acidic, but there's some wood ash on there now and it's probably brought the pH up a bit. i'm hoping to get some horse chit (well rotted) shortly. I'll spread that on top, then plant in march as per Munty and hope for the best.

It was covered in couch before, so, hope i ain't got eelworm

A draught resistant one for next year for you, maybe? I get me coat...

I think I would not bother with sand for pots, but newly cultivated grassy areas always hide a few grubs to munch on underground crops for a couple of seasons.

Two good potatoes, with good flavour, should get a decent crop of them otherwise.

And the weather, it's serious, on Cara itself, one year I had a brill crop, next year 2-3 under on average.  And it wasn't just me, as it was substituted in the mixed pack of seed that year :!:

10kilos from a 20ft row for earlies
15-16 kilos for main
Mids- in between.

Although in a good year you may get a bit more and in a bad year a bit less.
In a very bad year nil.

I like that.  One Kilo per 2ft.
I like simple numbers.  We've been here before and I'm lost again.  I'm going to get my notebook out now.
