nursery advice
« on: December 14, 2012, 00:33 »
I am looking to buy fruit tree rootstocks and have seen 2 on the web- blackmoor nursery and ashridge nursery. Ashridge's are about £15 more for the same items but they are 2 years old.

I just wondered if anyone has used either of them and what was the quality of their products like.

Thanks,
dmg

I've used Blackmoor, but that's no help because I only planted them last month and they at the mo are just overgrown twigs sticking out of the ground.  But they did send them on time  and everything went according to plan, and they look healthy as far as I can tell.  I'm no expert. But I'll have to wait till spring, to see if they sprout.

I've used Ashridge, but only for raspberries, which I cannot fault. They were bare rooted, but really sturdy plants.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Used Ashridge for trees at my last house, and agree with DD.

Blackmoor are excellent in my experience, good communication throughout and specific with their delivery date. Their website is very helpful to new fruit growers too - on each items page there is info on the right including planting guidelines, harvesting times and rootstock advice

Have also found Victoriana Nursery to be good

I have used blackmoor twice, I bought my folks an apple tree a couple of years ago and that was delivered on time, it looked good and grew well. This year I have just planted two pear trees at home and I couldn't fault them for delivery etc. I also got a fruit growing handbook with the order which was a nice bonus!

Ive just got 5 2 year old rootstocks from here:

http://www.hedging.co.uk/

Good sturdy, healthy looking plants for £1.75 each.

They`re a bit more expensive on the website  (I went down in person) but may be worthwhile depending on the other prices youve seen
