spades
« on: December 06, 2012, 19:09 »
I have just finished turning over the plot for this year and I found it quite difficult because of the spade i've got. I ended up with a bit of lower back ache, and i wasn't overdoing it.
Its an orange handled fiskars Ergocomfort spade that is quite tall, which i like, but it has very little angle which becomes a problem with the clay soil i have as i'm having to lower the spade further to get the clod away.
The spade is actually really good for, say, digging a hole, but it doesn't cut the mustard when it comes to large areas of clay. it has steps on the top edge to help push down which are a must.

So what spades have you found to be the best?

I found a garden fork better in my clay. Makes for some lumps but it gets in there easily and turned over with less back pull.
