Advice on comb and food?
« on: December 01, 2012, 17:58 »
Hello all,

Just a question really, I have been told groates? Are good for the hens this time of year as it warms there inside up? Rumour or true? Also I have to white star hens who are lovely girls but the comb is HUGE should I be wary of cold frosts etc getting tips of the combs?

Cheers

Food wise stick to the proper food for your hens which is layers pellets or layers mash of the best quality you can afford, from a reputable source.  You can supplement this with regular green vegetables

As regards the combs, you are right, they are susceptible to frost so you get a bit of Vaseline on your fingers and very gently rub over the combs.  This will help prevent damage to the comb from frost.  You have to learn to handle your birds so you can do jobs like these.  A little treat of a dry mealworm (you can buy these from the pet shop or Wilko) and the hens love them and it will make them easier to pick up as the bird will come and take it from you. That's the plan anyway  :D  It is a treat though as they are fattening

if you are worried about your girls combs then you can give them a light smear of petroleum jelly - this will help prevent frost bite (although a lot of hens will tuck their head under their wing).
Staffies are softer than you think.
